The Legend of Prince Madoc
|

Steeped in time, surrounded by myth, the story of the Welsh Prince Madoc and his discovery of the new world over three hundred years before Columbus, gives all who believe in the tale, a new perspective on horses in America. Were Welsh ponies on the American continent long before the Spanish landed? Do the ancient Welsh breeds share responsibility with early Spanish horses for the "swift, little ponies" so prized by Native Americans of early historical record?

There is evidence of course, to sway thinking in either direction, but the truth may never be known. What is certain is that Welsh Mountain Ponies and Cobs are ancient breeds that have been used for centuries by peasant and royalty alike. Romans used the sturdy ponies to race chariots. Later, Cobs led medieval knights on Crusade. Throughout it all, the reliable Welsh breeds have been used to plow fields, pull carriages, chase game and carry children.

Everywhere the Welsh breeds went, they left their indelible stamp on the local equine population. A ground-covering trot, wide forehead and tiny ears, a powerful neck with cascades of thick mane, a tail set high on, and an intelligent expression with a big, bold eye. This is a Welsh Pony.

If Prince Madoc really did sail away from trouble and strife in 1170 A. D. and if he really is the true discoverer of the new world, then there can be no doubt that he would have brought his horses with him. And so, with this faith in the ancient Welsh explorers, we proudly claim our heritage and introduce you to Madoc Farms. Named of course, in honor of Prince Madoc, rightful discover of the New World and appreciator of the finest little horses of both ancient and modern times.
