Ponies & Cobs

In 1980, we were once again living in England. My husband and his business partners had been doing quite well and decided to reward their wives' patience with fur coats. This was the same year that the Wynne Davis book, "Welsh Ponies and Cobs" was published and I asked that my "fur coat" have four legs attached. It was my desire to find Cobs of riding type that were sound enough of mind and body to use as school horses for my teenage students.
In due time, Miriam and I set out searching for Section Ds and we were lucky to meet Anne Vestey of the Kentchurch Stud, who was very helpful in guiding me toward breeders of riding type cobs. Our search took us to southeastern England and all of Wales, taking in the Royal of England Show, Norhleach, and the Royal Welsh Show. The result was five fillies and a colt. Another cob filly was added in 1982 and Kentchurch Chime arrived in 1983.
Chime's relationship with Nancy Hinz began when she took over the lesson program at Madoc Farm. Nancy was interested in Dressage and was offered Chime for a project. At first we were skeptical when Nancy's dressage coach, Lurena Bell, thought this 14.1 hand fat cob had the potential to go to the top! But of course, she was right. The three worked together with Nancy and Chime accompanying Lurena to Florida each winter to show and train, working through the levels of Dressage. The team made a tremendous impression on all of the Florida riders. In 1999, Nancy began training with Pam Goodrich and showing at Grand Prix level. In February 1999 Chime was one of the top 10 Grand Prix Freestyle competitors in Florida and was selected to compete in the Winsome Classic. Chime continues to be the dream Dressage competitor with a zest for life and an easy, sweet temperament.
He is the herd sire for Madoc's Cob breeding program. Many of Chime's children are now competing in all levels of dressage and combined training. Chime passes along his kind, willing nature and his big, bold movement to all of his children.
Although the Cobs are wonderful, our first love will always be the Section A's. In 1995 we decided to look for a top notch A stallion and the Brookside Stud in Canada provided us with Brookside Starry Knight. "Starry" is adorable with a sweet temperament as well has having plenty of A type. He has been broken to ride and as time permits will be trained to drive. His foals have his lovely movement and kind attitude.
